This past Friday was homecoming for the high school students. The homecoming festivities were preceded by spirit week! Students dressed up in a variety of attire from sports wear to music for a variety of decades. On Friday, there was a pep rally, homecoming football game, and a fun boot scoot after that had line dancing, s'mores, and delicious food! I was a chaperone for the events which was such a rewarding experience. Although I was there from 7:30 a.m. until midnight (talk about a long day!) it was absolutely worth every moment. I was able to learn so much about the students by watching them outside of the typical school schedule. I gained insight into their peer groups and social interactions. I also was able to meet students I have not engaged with as much yet. I think as a school counselor one should be as engaged and visible as possible. It makes a difference for the students seeing you support them in extracurriculars. It was really sweet talking with students and hearing them say they were happy that I came. The ability to build rapport and show that you are an adult who cares, beyond just saying the words, is truly impactful.
The entire student services team chaperoned which also allowed us to grow closer as a team. Team unity makes a huge difference in any workplace, but especially when those you work with form a care team that surrounds each student in support and services they need to be successful. Team harmony enhances the ability to do so. I am so thankful to be a part of this team and for all I have learned, and continued to learn, from them.
All my love,
LeAnn Wills
